Megastructures are the endgame fantasy of Stellaris. A Dyson Sphere wrapping a star. A Ring World replacing an entire solar system. A cannon that cracks planets from across the galaxy. They are also the single most confusing system in the game for a simple reason: the unlock path is not obvious, the DLC requirements are scattered, and the numbers behind each structure are buried in tooltips and wikis.

This guide fixes that. Every megastructure gets a row in the master table. The build order is based on return on investment, not vibes. The tier list ranks by opportunity cost, not raw power. And the habitat section covers the post-rework system that has confused more players than any other mechanic in recent patches.

How Megastructures Unlock in 4.3

The number one newcomer question is "I reached the late game and there are no megastructures in my tech tree." The answer is that megastructures are gated behind a pipeline, not a single technology. There is no tradition tree for them, despite what you may have read.

The Tech, Perk, Build Pipeline

Here is the full sequence for the big three wonders:

  1. Research Mega-Engineering. This is a rare technology. Having a ruined megastructure inside your borders multiplies the draw chance by 20. Multiple Citadel starbases also help. If you have been playing for 200 years and never seen it, expand toward a ruined Ring World or Sentry Array.
  2. Build or restore any multi-stage megastructure. Restoring a ruined one counts and does not consume your build slot. This is the cheapest path if a ruin is nearby.
  3. Take the Galactic Wonders ascension perk. It requires a completed megastructure from step two. This perk gates Dyson Sphere, Ring World, and Matter Decompressor.
  4. Research the specific technology. Each wonder has its own tech that appears after Galactic Wonders.

Kilo-structures skip all of this. Arc Furnaces, Dyson Swarms, Orbital Rings, and Hyper Relays have their own technologies and no perk gate. You can build them decades before Mega-Engineering appears, and they are the backbone of your early economy. More on them in the build order section.

Build Speed: Every Modifier Stacked

You cannot assign multiple construction ships to a single megastructure. One builder, always. The construction ship is only needed for the first stage; later stages build automatically. So the question is not "how do I add more builders?" but "how do I stack speed modifiers?"

The practical maximum without the Contingency relic is +150%: Master Builders, the living metal edict, and the unity ambition. With the relic, you hit +450%. Edict funds can further reduce construction time, so check your edict funds panel before starting a long build.

The Megastructure Cap (and How to Beat It)

The default cap is one simultaneous multi-stage construction. Master Builders adds one more. Federation research can add another. In practice, you will have two or three slots at most.

But here is the critical detail: the cap is on starting construction, not on possessing megastructures. Ruined megastructures do not count. Restored ones do not count toward the cap but do count as a completed mega for Galactic Wonders. Capturing an enemy megastructure through conquest gives you an extra one beyond the cap.

The vassal loop exploits this directly and works in 4.3:

  1. Release a sector as a vassal. Strip it to one system.
  2. Set resource contributions to 0%, enable integration, prohibit expansion, set war participation to none.
  3. Feed the vassal alloys: 125 to 250 per month, or a lump sum of 10,000 to 15,000.
  4. The AI builds a megastructure when it is not at war and its naval capacity is above 90%. Lend it corvettes to fill the cap.
  5. Reintegrate the vassal. You now own both megastructures.
  6. Repeat.

Integration takes about 10 years and you can only integrate one vassal at a time, so this is a long-game strategy. But it is the only legitimate way to get ten of everything.

Build Order: What to Build First and Why

Most guides tell you what each megastructure does. Almost none tell you what to build first. The build order below is based on a single principle: return on investment.

The ROI Principle

Every megastructure competes for the same alloys. The question is never "is this good?" but "is this better than 33,000 alloys of battleships?" ROI is monthly output divided by total alloy cost, which gives you the payback period in months. Timing matters just as much: a megastructure that pays for itself in 10 years when the crisis hits in 15 is worth building. One that pays for itself in 40 years is not.

Phase 1: Kilo-Structures (Year ~2250–2300)

These need no Mega-Engineering and no ascension perk. They are available decades before the big wonders and they fund everything that follows.

The Arc Furnace sweet spot is a system with 15 or more available deposits on a molten world. With 10 celestial bodies, you get roughly 60 minerals and 40 alloys per month for about 100 energy upkeep. The Dyson Swarm on a physics star with 5 or 6 research output gives you 150 to 180 physics per month by 2300 — a large share of your early research budget.

One warning on Dyson Swarms: on a low-energy star, the 20-alloy upkeep at market rate can cost more energy than the swarm produces. The main value is science on physics stars, not energy on energy stars. Check the star's output before committing.

Orbital Rings have three tiers. Tier 1 costs 1,000 alloys and 50 influence. Tier 2 requires a capital building upgrade and costs 1,500 alloys and 100 influence. Tier 3 requires the next capital tier and costs 2,000 alloys and 150 influence. Build tier 1 everywhere first, then upgrade your most specialized worlds. Hyper Relays should form a network in your core systems, not your borders. Building relays near your frontier gives enemy fleets a fast route into your territory. Leave deliberate gaps near fortress worlds.

Phase 2: First Multi-Stage (Year ~2300–2330)

Build the Mega Shipyard. Always.

It is the cheapest multi-stage megastructure at 33,000 alloys and roughly 20 years. The +100% ship build speed is empire-wide, not local to the Shipyard itself, which surprises many players. Ships built there start with 100 experience, which translates to +10% weapon damage. It can build Titans, Colossi, and Juggernauts. And completing it unlocks Galactic Wonders, which gates the three biggest structures in the game.

If you found a ruined megastructure, restore it instead. A ruined Ring World costs 10,000 alloys and 10 years to repair. That is cheaper, faster, still unlocks Galactic Wonders, and does not eat your build slot.

Phase 3: Galactic Wonders Tier (Year ~2330–2380)

After Galactic Wonders, the choice depends on your bottleneck.

The Dyson Sphere is the default pick. Energy is universal, you do not need a black hole, and the Swarm upgrade path with The Machine Age makes it cheaper. The Matter Decompressor wins only if you are mineral-starved and already have a black hole in your borders.

This is how you get 10 Science Nexuses and +150% research speed, or 10 Dyson Spheres and 40,000 energy per month.

This tier list ranks by opportunity cost. Not "is this good?" but "is this better than the alternative use of those alloys?" A structure can be powerful and still be B-tier if something else delivers more for the same investment.

S-tier commentary: The Mega Shipyard is the consensus best first build across every source and every community discussion. It is cheap, fast, gives immediate military value, and unlocks the entire wonder tier. Gateways are the community's beloved "Tier SS" pick that authors keep leaving off tier lists. Instant FTL between any two gateways, regardless of distance or owner, is the single best mobility tool in the game. Arc Furnaces and Orbital Rings are S-tier because they are available decades before Mega-Engineering and multiply everything you already have.

A-tier commentary: The Science Nexus is still A-tier for most empires, but it is no longer the auto-pick it was before Paragons. Councilors and leaders now give so much percentage-based research speed that the flat +15% from the Nexus is less impactful. The Synaptic Lathe with Cosmogenesis is strictly better if you have it. The Grand Archive at 1,000 alloys is the cheapest multi-stage structure in the game and fills up with specimens that give empire-wide bonuses. The Galactic Crucible is A-tier for naval-focused empires because +300 naval cap is enormous, but it requires the Infernals DLC and entropy crystals.

Where the community disagrees: The Sentry Array is the most contested placement. Authors consistently rank it F. Players who have survived crisis invasions because they saw the fleet coming rank it B. The intel is real. The lag is also real. If you play on a large galaxy with weaker hardware, it is C or worse. If you have a strong PC and value information, it is B.

The Matter Decompressor is A-tier for most empires and S-tier if minerals are your specific bottleneck. Non-subterranean, non-hive empires almost always hit a mineral wall in the late game. The black hole requirement is the real gate, not the alloy cost. Scout for a black hole early if you are considering this path.

The Ring World is B-tier not because it is weak but because it is late. By the time you finish building one from scratch, the crisis is knocking and your research is mostly done. The best Ring World is one you did not build: find a ruined one, repair it for 10,000 alloys and 10 years, and you have a size-25 research world in the mid-game.

Habitats and Orbital Rings in 4.x

The habitat system has been reworked more than any other mechanic in recent memory, and the confusion is justified. Here is what the system looks now, based on the latest available data.

The Habitat System

Each system can have exactly one Habitat Central Complex. The old habitat spam is gone. Habitats are built above stars or planets and finish in a single stage: 5 years, 150 influence, and 1,500 alloys for a mechanical shipset. The colony develops 50% faster than on planets.

You cannot build a habitat above a celestial object that already has another megastructure, and some system types (such as those with a Ring World) may also block placement. Hovering over the habitat in the build menu shows which of your systems offer the most districts, so use that tooltip before choosing a location.

The specialization is dictated by the system's deposits. Major orbitals around planets and stars add districts, including special districts that match the deposit type. Minor orbitals around moons and asteroids add resource districts and building slots. Starting habitability is 40%, upgradeable through technologies and decisions, with a maximum size of 22 at full upgrades. Check the in-game tooltip for exact district counts, because these numbers have shifted between patches.

Habitat Central Complexes can be ruined by a Colossus or by crises. If ruined, all orbitals are destroyed.

Two practical warnings. First, the Masterful Crafters civic does not work on habitats, so do not plan around it. Second, the habitation district on a habitat gives building slots at a 2:1 ratio compared to a city district's 1:1, which means cities are more efficient for housing and building slots if you have the space. Check the in-game tooltip for exact district counts in your patch, because these numbers have shifted between patches.

Orbital Rings: The Quiet Powerhouse

Orbital Rings are the kilo-structure that quietly doubles your economy. They require the Overlord DLC and a Starhold starbase, but no Mega-Engineering.

The key mechanic: Orbital Rings add a flat base production bonus to almost all jobs on the planet below. This is not a percentage. It multiplies on top of all your existing percentage bonuses, which means it scales harder the more specialized the planet is. On a hyper-specialized world, an Orbital Ring can roughly double output.

Habitation modules add +1 planet size each, up to +4. Special buildings include climate optimization (+2 food per farmer), alloy processing, and orbital logistics. The ring also provides defense platforms, shipyards, and anchorage, functioning as a second starbase.

Build an Orbital Ring on every colonized planet. The tier 1 cost is 1,000 alloys and 50 influence. There is no scenario where this is not worth it.

The Conflict You Will Discover Too Late

You cannot build an Orbital Ring around a planet that has a Habitat orbiting it. And you cannot build a Habitat around a planet that has an Orbital Ring. This is per planet, not per system. In the same system, you can have rings on some planets and habitats on others.

Choose per planet: the Ring boosts the planet below, the Habitat creates an independent colony. For most planets, the Ring is the better choice because the flat base production bonus multiplies everything the planet already does. Habitats win when you want an additional colony without settling a new world, or when the planet below is too small to benefit much from a ring.

Void Dwellers

If you are a returning Void Dweller player, the system changed. Habitats are your home planets, and the rework hit this origin harder than any other. The old multi-habitat-per-system spam is gone, and the community sentiment is blunt: many players feel the origin lost its identity.

What works now: agriculture districts on habitats and hydroponics buildings for food. The colony develops 50% faster than on planets, which partially compensates for the smaller size. Specialize your single habitat per system for research, because that is where the district bonuses are strongest. For everything else, you are still better off settling actual planets when you can.

The Ring World's real problem is not cost. It is timing. By the time you finish building from scratch, your research is mostly done and the crisis is imminent. The best Ring World is one you did not build: find a ruined one, repair it for 10,000 alloys and 10 years, and you have a size-25 research world in the mid-game. Ruined Ring Worlds appear in three Ancient Caretakers fallen empire systems, one random empty system, one in the Cybrex Alpha precursor chain, and one in Cybrex Beta if the Contingency sterilizes 20% of the galaxy.

Star selection for the Dyson Sphere: the output is a flat 4,000 energy per month regardless of star class. Claims that K-class stars give less are confusing the Dyson Swarm, which amplifies the star's existing output ×30, with the Sphere, which has a fixed output. Build the Sphere in a system with no valuable planets, because they all become frozen or barren anyway. Mining stations in the system are also destroyed on completion, so relocate them first if you can. With The Machine Age, build a Dyson Swarm on a physics star first for ×30 research, then upgrade to the Sphere for energy. The upgrade path starts the Sphere at Stage II, saving you roughly 5–6 years and about 2,000 alloys compared to building from scratch.

DLC Requirements: What You Need to Buy

If you own only Utopia, you have five megastructures. Full DLC gives you twenty or more. This table tells you exactly what you are missing.

The single best DLC purchase for megastructures is Utopia. It gives you five structures including the Dyson Sphere and Ring World. The Machine Age is the second-best because Arc Furnaces and Dyson Swarms are your early-game economy engine. Federations gives you the Mega Shipyard, which is the best first multi-stage build. If you own all three, you have the complete core progression.

Advanced Strategies

Synergies Nobody Talks About

  • Dyson Sphere + Market. 4,000 energy per month lets you buy alloys on the market and fund your remaining megastructures. The Sphere funds itself within a decade.
  • Mega Shipyard + Strategic Coordination Center. The Shipyard builds fleets fast. The SCC gives +15% sublight speed so those fleets arrive fast. Together they are a crisis-response machine.
  • Science Nexus + Repeatable technologies. The +15% research speed should apply to repeatables as well. In the mid-game, this compounds into a massive technology lead.
  • Arc Furnace + Orbital Ring in the same system. The Furnace doubles mining station output. The Ring adds flat base production to the planet below. Stack them on a resource-rich system for multiplicative gains.
